Health Care Workers are Contracting MERS

As seen in recent news, Health Care Workers are contracting MERS in hospitals. We will soon see more hospitals moving to meet the responsibilities of safety to their employees.  This was shown in SARS 2002-2003. Also proven was that Singapore shut down SARS on the island mostly on the basis of fever surveillance of non-patients.  By screening all contractors, employees and guests for fever, they found all the SARS cases.  Interestingly they found SARS in 1 out of 4 fever cases.  Another compelling overlooked fact is that 3 out of 4 febrile people were not SARS. Why were these febrile people in the hospital? Ward Nurses

If fever screening in Singapore has been proven to stop the spreading of SARS, what does that say about what hospitals are doing now?  We at Wello believe that hospitals are the source of Community Acquired Infection. CAI is not from hospital patients but from guests, employees and contractors entering the hospital and going back to the community.  Hospitals have a tremendous infection breach by permitting people from the community including employees, patient visitors and vendors to enter unscreened.  In addition, suppliers providing necessities such as sterile linens and food products do not screen their workers creating another avenue to spread infection.

It’s hard to believe, harder to promise, but hospitals are unwitting the spreaders of disease and the simple solution – automatic febrile screening.
