Ebola in Guinea

Ebola Virus

The Guinea Ministry of Health has confirmed as of March 30, 2014 there are 112 confirmed cases of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever with 70 cases resulting in deaths.  These numbers have also been confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO).  Complete details of the reporting can be found on the CDC website.

Ebola hemorrhagic fever is spread by direct contact with blood or other body fluids and may also be spread through contact with infected animals.  One of the primary and early symptoms of the virus is a fever in addition to other flu like ailments.  There is no danger of airborne spread of the disease, and travelers to Guinea are only at risk if direct contact is made to an infected individual.

This outbreak points out the importance monitoring for fever plays in the early detection of infectious diseases.  A fever almost always indicates the presence of an infection and precaution should be taken to isolate yourself to protect others from the spread of infection.
